Architectural Design 2: Minor Project 1

For the first minor project, it's about Vernacular architecture so we're required to do some research on Maldives vernacular architecture (hence previous post) for our group of 18 students so about 3 weeks ago we had presentation together with our precedent studies on local Malaysian architect for Minor Project 2.

but to day I'm going to share the first minor project and post the second one later. :)

A poster to sum up all the things we found out.

We even come up with a model of that house.

Other groups' posters.

After presentation, we had the open critique session with the 8 lecturers so it got really ugly I have to tell you.

But that's what being in architecture school all about. Being trained to become an architect ain't an easy thing so got punched in the face with those nasty comments are good thing. I sincerely hope.

So many things need to be reconsidered for our next assignment, the beginning of our major project so I hope it's better for me to document some stuffs here so I can recall what I need to include for our next presentation which is the Site Analysis.

let's hope and work for the best.

Until then, take care.

Maldives' Interesting Buildings

The National Library of the Republic of Maldives was founded on 12th July 1945 as the "State Library" of the Maldives by Ameer Mohamed Amin Didi, then the Head of the Department of Education. The Library was renamed "Majeedi Library" in 1948 after one of the most popular statesmen of the Maldives, Ameer Abdul Majeed Didi.

In the climate of development and modernization that has prevailed since 1978 the library was named "National Library" by His Excellency President Mr. Maumoon Abdul Gayoom on 1st June 1982 .

Established on the National Day of the Maldives, the first National Museum of the country was opened on November 11, 1952, by the Prime Minister at the time, Mohamed Amin Didi.

With the purpose of preserving history and calling upon a sense of patriotism among the people, the building values a large collection of historical artifacts, ranging from stone objects to fragments of royal antiquities from the Buddhist era to the rule of Islamic monarchs.

The Islamic Centre (officially named Masjid-al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam) is an architectural landmark in Malé, Maldivesopened in 1984 by President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
This centre acts as a major tourist attraction of Malé, because of its location near the main jetty of Malé and due to the beautiful architecture of the mosque. The magnificent golden dome of the mosque is also evident on the skyline of Malé. The shining golden dome of the mosque is a standout as are also the interior walls decorated with beautiful woodcarvings and Arabic calligraphy.

The Grand Friday Mosque

The grand mosque with its dominant golden dome and the slender Minaret decorate the façade of Male'. It can accommodate over five thousand worshippers at a time. Nearly all visitors to Male' take time to visit this magnificent landmark.

University Breaks and Future Plans

Finally I'm done with examinations and right now I'm in the middle of packing for holiday! :D

New Year was celebrated in exam hall so I guess I'm gonna do some sort of delayed celebrations with family members at home. hehe

Anyway, I honestly don't really know what sort of things I'm going to do for this upcoming break as I'm still nervous about whether I survived my second attempt in Architectural Design 1 (studio) subject.

My parents already decided on our trips to Kuching, Sarawak for about a week I think 2 days after I'm back in KK later and of course we're gonna go to visit my bro and our lil' Adam so that's included.

other than that, I'm pretty sure my schedule is opened without anything to do during the break.

I'm thinking of taking some sort of photography class but I have no damn clue where I should be going for it. Sigh.

Future plans.

Like I said above, whether I'm going to survived firs or not is still I'm unsure about but right now I have 2 options.

If I really did survived the subject, I guess proceeding to Design 2 will be hassle-free and I'll be sticking to my current study plans.

but if I didn't... I guess it's time to wake up and find a new path. it's been almost 3 years and I'm still in freaking first year of first degree. I covered all my first year subjects and I'm afraid I exhausted my semesters so yeah, I'm very much worried about that.

But of course, I tried my best, albeit so many things happened not according to my plans this semester so let's hope this semester turned out okay and there's gonna be a post on Design 2 within a month time. :)

Until then, take care.

Typical First Week.

So I heard the Design Studio was postponed due to the First Year's bai'ah (Promise) session today. Ah, I remember when I took my oath. I was the only who's sitting while others are required to stand up. Haha That's another day's story.

So I just decided to clear out all my fees, with additional of RM12.50 to my hostel fee (Thank God we don't have to register our electrical appliances anymore!) and went to KAED Office to register the remaining 2 subjects. Then, I just head back to my mahallah and continue unpacking my stuffs.

That was on Monday. On Tuesday, I went to my Architectural Graphics studio and meet Dr. Zaiton who just got back from Rome after 2 years. Listening to her experiences is definitely making you wanna go there like now, now.

On Wednesday, I had my first Building Services 1 class, taught by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Raza. I'm definitely not happy with this, due to last semester's experience with History and Theory of Architecture 2. But then, all we can do is pray hard and study well, right?

Yesterday, I had my first Environmental Science and System 2 class, taught by our beloved newly-appointed Deputy Dean Academic Affair, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Noor Aziah. Like before, ESS 2 is going to be amazing. She issued out the briefing for our assignments, that's need to be submitted after mid-sem break. Sigh~

As for today, we had the Design Studio session from the morning until lunch and continued from 2 to 4 p.m.. But only for today as starting next week, Friday's session will be only in the morning. First Minor Project has been issued and as for that, we gonna start with a group task. I'll post on that later. Oh, no session for this upcoming Monday. Cause it's holiday, baby! Hoyeah!

So, that's a wrap for this week. I'll see you guys on the next blogpost.

New Year. New Goals.

So I woke up this morning with one thing popped into my head at once.

New academic year. This year is going to be my second year since I change to Architecture Department here in Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design of IIUM.

There are only few subjects left before I'm proceeding to my second year. Can't wait to be done with First Year subjects!

I already registered 3 subjects so far, Building Constructions and Materials 3, Environmental Science & System 2 and Building Services 1. I'll register the remaining 2 once I'm back on campus tomorrow.

Anyway, as I was saying, new goals.

Most importantly, I wan to do better in Design Studio. I really hope that this upcoming semester will run smoothly unlike the previous year where everything was chaotic with mixed directions by different lecturers and whatnot.

I think I'm becoming more and more adapted to this course. Thank God.

well, I need to pack up everything today so I guess I'll see you guys next blogpost.

P.S.: Less is More. No. When it comes to my hostel essentials, there's no way that less is more. The list could go on and I probably gonna buy a lot of things if you were to bring me to IKEA now. LOL

So-called Summer Break

Say hello to 3 months break!

So the plan is to go YOLO.

Seriously laughing out loud right now.

Anyway, this probably my last summer vacation so....

I'll see you guys in September!

Adious!

Site Analysis: Informing Context-Sensitive and Sustainable Site Planning and Design

So I decided to invest a little bit more on Site Analysis book and this time, I got this book. After reading few chapters, I really find that this book is extremely helpful and of course a detailed one. So no more of those shabby-ancient style of presenting a site analysis presentation board.

2 Weeks and I'm Bored.

Yesterday, I found out that there's clashed between the schedules of subjects I have been taking and the result of that is I have to choose between Structures I and Islamic Worldview.

.... As the process of adding the Islamic Worldview subject was just really crazy and almost made me wanna cry in the middle of the campus the other day plus it's really difficult to register that subject via online, and as Structures I is offered every semester, I decided to let go Structures I.

Hence, I merely taking three subjects this semester. Sigh~

I guess, I have to make use of my time to study harder and practice my drawing skills.

I've been looking for material the past few days and I don't know whether this sounds good or just weird, I've also been trying to find something that I can't really describe in words as for now.

It might be a thing. Or maybe a person.

That can make me myself again.

I guess I'm just really down because of not being able to continue design studio with my friends.

Why does this happen to me?

Welcome to Semester II, 2012/2013

Up until today, I've attended several classes. Some are already registered, but some are still on the way to be registered as the schedule just chaotic right now. So, hopefully everything will be settled by tomorrow as tomorrow is also the last day to register subjects.

Today I have no class in the morning though I supposed to attend Islamic Worldview but fortunately it was cancelled. In the evening, I had Structures 1 with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abu Eusuf and so far I gotta say. He's old school, man!

We supposed to have replacement lecture for History but since the time was clashed with Structures, I have to see Dr. Ali Raza tomorrow.

First week, well. Not so much as I don't have studio.

I'm planning to do some drawing and sketching session later. Will upload here soon. Well, it won't be pleasing your eyes but what more can I say. I'm still learning.

Alright, I have to wake up early tomorrow to see Asst. Dr. Aida, my Building Construction and Materials 2 lecturer to get her stamp as she didn't stamp my Adjustment Course form yesterday.

Hope the finalized schedule will turn out better as I desperately need to take at least 12 credit hours this semester.

Signing out,
